Re: Canadian Martial Arts Games 2000

I am writing this open letter of invitation to you on behalf of the Canadian Martial Arts Games Committee (CMGC). The official Canadian Martial Arts Games 2000 will be taking place in Ottawa/Hull on June 23 and 24, 2000. The actual competition will be held at the Robert Guertin Arena, 125 rue Carillion, Hull, Quebec. Accommodations is at Ramada Plaza Hotel, 35 rue Laurier, Hull, Quebec, Tel: (819) 778-6111, Fax: (819) 778-8548, Toll Free 1-800-567-9607.

This tournament is the product of 2 years of careful planning and hard work by the dedicated members of the CMGC. They have been meeting monthly at the Parliament building in Ottawa with the Honourable Mr. Mac Harb, Member of Parliament, as well as representatives from different levels of government, and martial arts organizations across Canada, to put this event together.

CMGC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of all martial arts in Canada. This event will mark, for the first time, an official tournament involving Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo and Chinese Martial Arts all working together under one banner and presided over by representatives from the government of Canada. This is a first-time ever event of such wide scope and high caliber.

It is also a new chapter for the Chinese martial arts in Canada. There is now an official forum for all of us to participate in under one roof. It is high time for all of us to put aside our differences and work together as a single group to present all of Chinese martial arts to Canada and to the world.

For the Canadian Martial Arts Games 2000, we have put together a new format that is intended to accommodate the richness and diversity in our tradition, and at the same time, reflect the new trends and directions at the world level.

For the traditional stylists, we have a new format which divides all forms into 8 categories based on its movements and characteristics. Each will have its own set of judging criteria. The compulsory Wushu forms competition will follow the rules of international Wushu competition and the judging team will consist only of judges who have received official Wushu judging training in China. There will also be a Sanshou/Sparring event, Long and Short Weapon Sparring and Pushhand events.

For information, you may call me directly in the Toronto area (905) 602-5026 or Ms. Esther Yeung in Ottawa (613) 739-7395. Just remember that all competitors must pre-register by May 31, 2000. No exceptions.

I hope all of you will come out and support this event as competitors, judges, volunteers and spectators. We welcome all individuals and schools regardless of style, discipline or affiliation. This is an opportunity to get to know everyone else and let everyone else get to know you. I believe our format this year can accommodate just about everybody. So come on out and celebrate together. Ottawa is beautiful in June. See you all there.

Yours truly,
